Twice burned Microtel opens in Fort Mac

Fort McMurray, AB, November 2017

CALGARY — It burned down twice, but the Microtel Inn & Suites, a new Canadian prototypical hotel, has officially opened in Fort McMurray, Alta.

"It was a great night spent with representatives from many local businesses, Tany Yao, MLA for Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo and the Mikisew First Nation, our business partner in this hotel," said MasterBUILT Hotels director of sales and marketing, Donna Fahey, of the Nov. 20 opening event.

“This is an exciting opening for MasterBUILT Hotels. We have been planning and building this hotel since 2014 and to have lost it twice to fire, just makes this opening that much more significant, said Eric Watson, president of MasterBUILT Hotels. "We are so pleased to be part of the Fort McMurray community and to now officially open our doors and welcome guests is a significant point of pride for our entire team.”

The opening of the Fort McMurray hotel marks Microtel Inn & Suites by Wyndham’s fifth location in Alberta and this location is now the largest Microtel in Canada with 139 rooms and over 3,500 square feet in meeting facilities. During the construction phase of this project the hotel was lost twice to fire, once on December 25, 2015 due to arson and then again during the wildfire in May 2016.

On Oct. 23, MasterBUILT broke ground for the Aurora Microtel Inn & Suites by Wyndham, the brand’s sixth location in Ontario and the first Microtel located within the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).

The hotel is intended to be a flagship location for the brand, featuring its new urban construction design and offering guests modern accommodations with complimentary ultra high-speed Internet, hot continental breakfast, upscale fitness centre, swimming pool, and meeting room facilities.

It will be fully accessible and features the latest in safety and security in guest rooms and public spaces, including two electric car charging stations. The 100+ guest rooms and suites will feature a compact refrigerator, microwave and in room coffee with select rooms featuring a full kitchen, separate bedroom and living room, ideal for extended stays.

The Microtels in Fort McMurray and Aurora are part of an extensive development plan by MasterBUILT Hotels that calls for the opening of 75 Microtel by Wyndham hotels in Canada over the next 25 years. Currently there are 15 Microtel Inns & Suites open in Canada.

Two more hotels are slated for next year. Microtel Ladysmith is well underway and due to open in early May 2018 and the new modular build Microtel in Val D’or Quebec is due to open in early spring of 2018, said Fahey.
